Sensei Cruz is the head karate instructor of the Bougyo No Kan Dojo. He has been involved with the Martial Arts since 1991studying a variety of disciplines. These disciplines include the Karate styles of Goshen Ryu, Shorin Ryu, Isshin Ryu, Shotokan, Kyokashinkai, and Shudokan karate. Sensei Cruz has also cross trained in the grappling arts to give our students a well-rounded foundation in the Martial Arts. He has brought his studies in Judo, Ju Jitsu, Aikido and wrestling to our self-defense system adding many of the throws and joint locks taught within our program. Sensei Cruz still trains with Shihan William Seyler within the Shudokan and Shorin Ryu systems. He is proud to have Shihan Seyler as a part of the Bougyo No Kan dojo and testing board. Sensei Cruz has been teaching students since the age of 20, and coaching for the AAU since 2005. Sensei Cruz is proud of his involvement with the AAU; he has led many students to tournament success, winning titles on the District, Regional, National and Junior Olympic levels. Sensei Cruz’s goal is to not only have every student earn his or her Black Belt in Karate but also to give them the skills needed to be a Black Belt in life.

Sensei Cruz started his training in the Goshen Ryu Karate system under Shihan Kenneth MacCauley and Sensei Walter MacCauly. It was in this environment that Sensei Cruz began developing his philosophy on self-defense and was exposed to many different arts. Sensei Cruz was taught to always keep an open mind and look for ways to enhance and add to his training, as no one system can cover everything. After leaving the Goshen Ryu system Sensei Cruz moved on to training in Classical Ju Jitsu under Sensei Elliot Shubert. It was under Sensei Schubert that Sensei Cruz began blending the principles of Ju Jitsu with Okinawan Karate to offer a more streamlined self-defense system. After leaving the north east Sensei Cruz began training with in the Shorin Ryu system with Shihan Deb Lee & Shihan Sherry McGreggor in Orlando. While training with Shihan Lee, Sensei Cruz continued to hone his teaching skills working with both the junior and advanced students. While at the Orlando dojo Sensei Cruz, began his association with the AAU. After Shihan Lee relocated Sensei Cruz moved on to train exclusively with Shihan William Seyler.

Sensei Cruz has strong ties to the community, working in Orange County Law enforcement since 2007. Before that Sensei Cruz had served as an Orange County Substitute teacher. Sensei Cruz continues to further his education in both the Martial arts and Academics as he is currently working toward his Bachelor’s degree.

Shihan William Seyler - Master Instructor

Seyler Shihan began studying the martial arts at age twelve. Over time and through his travels in the US Air Force, Seyler Shihan has had the opportunity to gain knowledge and rank in several styles of martial arts. Shihan currently holds the ranks of 6th Dan in Shudokan Karate, 2nd Dan in Kobayashi Shorin-Ryu, 1st Dan in Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu, 1st Dan in Shotokan, and a Gold Sash (Masters Rank) in Lau-Wing-Pai Kung Fu.

Seyler Shihan has competed at many different levels of sport karate including point fighting, kata, weapons kata, Japanese style knockdown sparring, and kick boxing. Even though he has actively participated in these events he is very much a martial arts traditionalist and sees the study of sport karate as just an interesting footnote to a complete martial arts program. He is the AAU National Champion in both Kumite and Kata in his division. Seyler Shihan is the Head Coach for Team Seyler Martial Arts competition team, which encompasses both members from our Hombu dojo in addition to members of the Bougyo No Kan Dojo.

Like every martial artist he continues to strive for perfection in technique. He impresses on his students that the martial arts are life long journey that has no final destination.
